THE RED HILLS OF ESSEX Salt-making in Antiquity

A J Fawn, K A Evans, I McMaster, G M R Davies with contributions by P M Barford and R S Jefferies

Published by Colchester Archaeological Group

Since they were first investigated by antiquarians more than a century ago, the low mounds of the Essex coastal marshes known as the Red Hills have continued to attract the attention of archaeologists and the curiosity of local people. As relics of an ancient process they present an intriguing problem in industrial archaeology.

This book provides an up-to-date survey of what is known about them for the lay reader and will also be a reference source for archaeologists, particularly those who are concerned with saltern sites.

It includes a brief recapitulation of previous investigations; descriptions of the mounds, their associated artefacts and their surroundings; theories on the nature of the process; evidence for their age, and background information on sites of a similar nature in the rest of Britain and on the Continent.

Of particular interest will be the gazetteers listing the recorded sites and brief details of material recovered. Two appendices give further background information, especially on comparable sites that are earlier than the Red Hills.

A4, 112 pages, 4 maps, 36 illustrations in black and white and 13 in colour. Paperback, colour cover. ISBN O 9503905 1 8. £6.95 plus postage
