SHIP'S COMPLEMENT

Our current ship's complement is 34.

(6 are juniors with 28 enrolled cadets.)

CADET CATEGORIES

Our junior section is for girls and boys between the ages of 10 and 12 years. They have their own uniform which consists of black trousers, white polo shirt, navy sweat shirt, with the unit logo on, and navy beret. Black shoes (or boots) and socks must be worn.

Our senior section is for the over 12's. They begin as new entries and, after roughly 8 weeks, they are rated up to Cadet.

After this comes:

Ordinary Cadet,

Able Cadet,

Leading Cadet,

and the final accolade

Petty Officer Cadet.

- this latter level takes some achieving, which is why we present them with gold badges to wear on their arms instead of red ones.

UNIFORM

The cadets are issued with two uniforms.

No.4's - action working rig which consist of navy cotton trousers, blue shirt and woollen pullover and beret. Their No.1 uniform is exactly as that worn by the Royal Navy for ceremonial parades. These two uniforms, plus a navy windproof, are issued to the cadet for a deposit of £20 which is non-returnable.

The Sea Cadet Corps have their own training facilities at nearly all Royal Naval establishments, where cadets can go to obtain their second and first class qualifications for the various courses they can undertake. All third class qualifications can be obtained within the unit.

AFFILIATIONS

We are one of the Sea Cadet units affiliated to the Royal Navy's flagship, HMS ILLUSTRIOUS.

There are opportunities for cadets to spend time at sea on her.

Trinity House Lightvessel Number 16, T.S. COLNE LIGHT, is a steel lightship built by Phillip & Son Ltd., of Dartmouth in 1954. She arrived in Colchester in June 1991. She is 138 feet long and weighing 538 tons. There are three decks and she had six cabins, a galley, a messroom and extensive storage capacity. She had her own generators for 110 volts electricity with 3000 gallons capacity for fuel oil and a storage capacity of 5000 gallons for fresh water. When in service, the crews used to change by helicopter and the vessel has its own helicopter pad. The light, when in use, could be seen from 11 miles away. The light will not be put to use now as it could interfere with air traffic. She has guided shipping at various posts around the British coast and, from 1988 to 1991, was used by the Astrid Trust as a support ship, berthed in Southampton Docks.
