THE CROUCH FAMILY

Refer to Tom's line of descent here for the key to the numbering system used to give information about those individuals who are mentioned.

Our knowledge of this family extends back to one 52 Stanley Howard Barton Crouch who we believe was born in 1848 at Portland Jail. We think he died in 1924 at the age of 76. This has not been verified. We further understand that his father was the headwarden at Portland Jail. Stanley went on to marry 53 Mary Jane Deboarde who we assume was of Hugeonot ancestry.

According to 13 Marion, the father had a brother Howard Crawford Crouch who was a composer and who had a daughter Cora Pearl? Crouch. The Crouch family were very musical!

26 Arthur Joseph Stanley Crouch born 26 Aug 1884 in Westminster, the son of Stanley and Mary Crouch, and he died in Jun 1949 at Oulton Broad. He married 27 Anne Wain on 10 Jul 1909 at New Cross, London. He is shown on the 1901 census for Wesminster at age 16, a stationery stockkeeper with his mother and father and his sister Fanny F I Crouch, aged 11 years (This information kindly supplied by Liz Chapman, see below).

27 Annie Crouch, nee Wain who was born 18 Jul 1882 at Market Street stables, Paddington and died Jun1969 at Oulton Broad. The baby is 13 Marion Annie Crouch, later Seaton, who was born 15 Apr 1910 in Balham.

13 Marion Annie Crouch and her mother 27 Annie Crouch, nee Wain.

13 Marion Annie Crouch was born 15 Apr 1910 in Balham. She was Tom's great grandmother. She married 12 Charles Thomas Seaton on 13 Jul 1930 at Brixton. She died in the 1980's. Date please Rob!

On 6 Apr 2006, we received the following email:

Hello Jess, I have just found your pages on the Jephcott family history. I think that I can offer you some Irish, and possibly Scottish ancestry. I hope that you can help me with my research.

My mother was adopted at the age of 4 in 1931 from a huge orphanage in Bristol. Unfortunately her records were destroyed in the war and all we have is an adoption certificate and a birth certificate. I am researching her family for her and hope to have some results for her Diamond Wedding in June.

She was born on 24/6/1927 at 46 Ouseley Rd, Balham (a hospital) as Ruth Woolhead. Her mother was Fanny Florence Isobel Woolhead (nee Crouch) of 14 Tregarvon Rd, Battersea. No father is shown on the certificate, and we can find no record of marriage or death.

The 1901 census reveals Fanny Florence Isobel Crouch aged 11 living in Peabody Buildings, Old Pye St, Westminster with her parents Stanley Crouch (44yrs), a Metropolitan Police Sergeant, Mary J Crouch (40yrs), and her brother Arthur J S Crouch (16yrs), a "Stationary Stockkeeper".

Stanley Crouch is shown as born in Portland, Dorset. The Dorset Online Parish Clerk website has a lot of information.

A Stanley Crouch (born 1854/55) had a number of siblings. His father Stephen Crouch was a Prison Warder at Portland and probably originated from Scotland. His wife Eliza was A Governess from Ireland. These look very much like the family of your Arthur J S Crouch. The attachments to this eMail contain some Dorset Parish extracts, and a copy of the 1901 census for Sergeant Stanley Crouch and his family.

It looks very much as if we are researching the same people. I hope this information is of use, but above all I hope that you can help me in finding some more information about my grandmother Fanny. What happened to her between 1901 and 1927. Who and where did she marry, and what happened to her after my mother was born? Best Wishes, Liz Chapman.

(Liz also sent extracts from the 1851 and 61 census for Portland, transcribed by Bob Stone.)

This was followed by the following update:

PS. We have made real progress since my eMail to you. We have found that Fanny married a Jesse Woolhead in 1917, had two sons Jesse in 1918 and Ronald in 1920, and then my mother in 1927. Shortly after she was divorced, married an Arthur Beer and moved to Somerset where she died in 1955. We are now in contact with the sons of both Jesse (jnr) and Ronald, and between us we are assembling quite a comprehensive picture.

Here ends what we know of the Crouch family line.
